Khiva in Uzbekistan, 1978

Khiva, another Silk Road city in Western Uzbekistan, Central Asia, photographed back in 1978. The colors of the slide film hopelessly faded, so I decided to convert the images to monochrome — only to discover that they now look better than they ever did in color.

Technical info: Russian Start SLR, 58 mm Helios-44 lens, East-German ORWO slide film, scanned to a Kodak Photo CD and postprocessed with Corel Photo-Paint.
